Black-naped Hares (Lepus nigricollis) are the only species of Hare in Sri Lanka. They can be found throughout the Island from sea level to the highest mountain.
They have a distinctive black stripe across the back of the neck and look as nervous as hares usually do.
There are no native rabbit species in Sri Lanka.
This Black-naped Hare (Lepus nigricollis) has survived a close encounter with a predator, judging by the damage to its ears.
These hares can reach speeds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph).
